SOCIO - RELIGIOUS REFORM MOVEMENTS IN INDIA
DURING 19TH CENTURY
The Indian society of 21st century is very different from the one in the first half of the 19th century. Multiple socio-religious factors prevented the society’s progress. Many sections of the Indian society were rigid and followed certain practices which were not in keeping with humanitarian values. The desire to reform the society was so strong that the reformers were now ready to face challenges as well as resistance from theorthodox Indians. They started several movements to bring desirable changes in the society.
According to them, society should be based on the concepts of liberty and equality both for men and women and this was possible only by the spread of modern liberal ideas and scientific education. These movements came to be called socio-religious movement because the reformers of 19th century felt that no change is possible in a society without reforming the religion. Several inhuman practices crept into religion and theyinfluenced the society at a large scale.
